What's the difference between a "retreat" and a "camp"
A "Retreat" is a 7 day event that is All-Inclusive (food, training, accommodation, tours, etc.). The Muay Thai classes are 90 minutes long and led by an experienced trainer and fighter. We focus primarily on technique, partner drills and technical sparring. We also do everything as a group including hikes, dinners out in town, trips to beaches etc.
A "Training Camp" is either 2 or 4 weeks long. It is all-inclusive EXCEPT food is not included because it's so cheap in Thailand and we wouldn't want to restrain you from eating just in one spot. The sessions are led by the Thai trainers and run for 2 hours. There are also opportunities to fight if that is something you'd like to check off the bucket list. We do a lot of group activities including fight nights, hikes and team BBQ's, but there is more time to do exploring on your own as well.
What's the experience level like at these events?
We have a very wide range of experience levels attending these trips. There's been people who have never trained Muay Thai a day in their life, but there's also been experienced fighters who have been training for years.
The great thing about these trips is that the trainers (whether it's myself or the Thai's) all know how to cater to a wide variety of levels, so there's something for everyone!
I've never trained Muay Thai before... can I still join?
Yes of course!
In fact, myself and all the trainers are used to working with all skill levels - especially beginners - and will make sure you learn proper technique early on in your Muay Thai development. It will also help being around and learning from other motivated individuals who are at the camp who may be more experienced than you. Basically, you’ve got nothing to worry about!
We've had dozens of people join our events who were complete beginners, so we know how to make sure you are learning the proper technique and having fun while doing it!
I'm over 50+ years old... will I be able to keep up?
We've had campers in their 50's and 60's attend both retreats and training camps.
And you know the craziest thing about that? Is that they often have the most energy out of the entire group!
Also another benefit of these trips is that you can go at your own pace and take sessions off as you see fit. Plus with so much beauty around you there is plenty to do if you decide to take a session off!
How much is a deposit?
The deposit for all vacations is $500 per person.
What is the refund/cancellation policy?
If cancelled outside 60 days we offer a full refund minus the deposit cost for the room.
If cancelled inside 60 days of the camp due to a serious life event (injury, sickness or death in the family) or because of COVID restrictions we also offer a full refund minus the deposit.
If cancelled within 60 days there is no refund. We don’t want you to make any last minute excuses (unless it’s a serious life event) because we know how much of a life-changing experience this will be for you!
*Your deposit is non-refundable. If you cancel your trip then your deposit can be used as a credit up to 1 year from the original event date.
If the trip is cancelled because of COVID restrictions will I receive a refund?
If you are unable to attend because your country/the hosting country imposes strict travel restrictions because of COVID you will receive a full refund minus the deposit, which can be used up to 1-year for a future retreat.
Will we have to wear masks while at the retreat or training camp?
We understand that there are many different opinions on how to handle COVID. We will do our best to make it the most stress/worry-free vacation possible.
That being said, as long as the country we host the event in does not require mandatory mask wearing, then you will not have to wear a mask.
If there IS a mandate for mask wearing, then we will have to abide by the government's decision.
But as of right now all the countries we host events in do not require mask wearing inside gyms.
Do I have to have a vaccine to attend?
We understand and respect everyone's decision to do whatever they want with their body.
We do NOT require you to have a vaccine to attend, however, as of February 2022:
The Costa Rica government requires travel health insurance if you are not vaccinated.
The US Government requires a negative test 24 hours before returning. We help set this up by bringing the clinic to the resort for testing the final day of the retreat.
Please keep in mind that we are trying our best to cater to everyone while complying with government travel restrictions. Since things are constantly changing it's hard to know for sure what will be required for you to travel to a certain country.
How many spots are there?
Depending on the event we max out at 25-30 attendees.
My partner/friend does not train but wants to come. Would he/she be able to still participate in other group activities?
No problem!
We offer packages for couples or groups where one person participates in the camp while the other one can relax by the beach or pool. Just let us know and we'll sort out the pricing with you personally.
We want to make a family vacation out of this... can children come too? Are they allowed to train?
What a great way to spend time as a family! The resorts that we stay at are kid-friendly so there would be no issue in that regard.
However, when it comes to the training we do not allow kids under 13 years old to train.
Will I be able to make it back to my home country?
This is something that we can not figure out for you and would require you to do your own due diligence when it comes to planning your travel.
Are there any payment options? When is the full payment due?
We require a $500 deposit per person to reserve your spot in the retreat. The final payment is due 60 days before the start date of your event.
You can fill out the retreat form if you want to discuss a payment plan option and we can help sort something out with you.
Are flights included?
No. Your flights aren't included in your package, but we're available to help advise you in booking them.
We recommend flying into Liberia Airport - the closest airport to the Jungles Edge Resort. Try to arrive between 8 AM - 4 PM local time so you can share a shuttle with fellow guests. We'll help arrange shuttles, too. The cost will be split among all passengers, so it's best to come between the aforementioned hours!
What do I do if I get sick/injured?
Adequate travel insurance is crucial to insuring you have a safe trip. It is up to you to make sure you’re covered for the activities involved and to find to proper insurance for your stay.
There are pharmacies and doctors nearby, so if you get ill or injured we will make sure you get quality attention.
What are the food options? How much will it cost to eat per day?
Food is included in your package and is served 3x a day. Most meals are local Costa Rican dishes like casado, fresh caught fish, fresh fruits, guacamole, platanos, burritos, rice bowls, salads, organic meats and much more. You also receive 1 refreshing tropical smoothie or fresh squeezed juice daily! If you are a vegetarian or vegan, Jungle’s Edge can cater to your needs as well. We also will be spending one day out as a group to eat at a local restaurant where meals are around $10-$20 depending on where we go and what you choose to eat.
I'm vegan and/or have dietary restrictions... can I still come?
Absolutely!
We've had vegans, vegetarians, gluten-free diets and everything in between come to our retreats.
We do our absolute best to cater to whatever dietary needs you have :)
